Are your kids whining that their same old summer camp is boring? Or do you want to give them an educational summer experience disguised as just plain fun? Or would you and your spouse like a second honeymoon in Europe with no kids tagging along? If you answered yes to any of the above, take a look at Camp California. No, it’s not on the beach in Malibu. It’s actually on the beach in Croatia! Two weeks at this camp on the edge of the beautiful Adriatic Sea is a never-to-be-forgotten experience.
Camp California is Europe’s first international American-style summer camp for kids from all over the world. Located near Umag, Croatia, the camp primarily draws children from Croatia, Hungary, and Italy. Other European countries are also represented, as are South Africa, the Americas, and Korea. Campers have the opportunity to get to know, make friends with, and learn about people from other places. This is the essential, life-enriching core experience of Camp California.
How do all these kids communicate? English is the only language spoken at Camp California. In fact, the only prerequisite for becoming a camper is a basic knowledge of English, at least enough to let others know what you need or want. By the time they leave, these kids are learning to use, really use, English in everyday life. And for native English speakers, being the teacher offers its own rewards.
Camp California offers four different programs to meet the needs of different ages and interests. Campers in the resident camp program, which is open to ages 8 through 14, participate in classic summer camp activities, including the traditional swimming, sports and crafts. Other choices range from archery and fencing to ropes courses and rocketry.
For teenagers, ages 14 to 17, two programs offer more excitement than the usual camp activities. Teen Adventure participants travel within Croatia, and may do some rock climbing, backpacking, or kayaking. For water lovers, Teen Sailing includes a week of in-camp instruction followed by a week of sailing along the Adriatic coast. There is also a Counselor-in-Training program for teens that are at least 15 years old.
