The Science behind Mosquito Magnet Octenol

If you are tired of slapping your body with bug spray every time you head outside, then a better option may be a Mosquito magnet trap which works with propane to attract bugs to the trap and then uses magnet energy to trap them there. This is a great way to lure mosquitoes into the trap and away from you. However, you may be wondering what causes the mosquitoes to actually be attracted to the trap.

This alluring device is called octenol.

Mosquito magnet octenol is an EPA registered secondary attractant that mimics the human breath. What this means is that mosquitoes believe they are getting close to a human when, in fact, they are being sucked up into the trap of the magnet by mosquito magnet octenol.

Why Use Mosquito Magnet Octenol

It is possible to use mosquito magnet traps without octenol. However, studies have shown that by using octenol with co2 will trap over 10 times the amount of mosquitoes as using just a co2 compound in your mosquito trap. In fact, a study showed that mosquitoes trapped using mosquito magnet octenol was at 5143 in just six weeks compared to only 527 trapped by using co2 alone.

Where Does Octenol Work

Octenol is best used on almost all mosquito species including salt marsh mosquitoes as well as black flies and no-see-ums which are just as annoying when spending the evening outside with your family. In fact, with Octenol, you can stop the constant swatting and actually enjoy the great outdoors.

Octenol is most commonly used in households that live in the northern region of the United States and Canada. However, Octenol does work in all regions. Octenol comes in a cartridge that is easy to replace once the solution is finished.

Why Does Octenol Work

Octenol works because it mimics human breath. While a mosquito magnet trap will emit carbon dioxide which lures mosquitoes in, it is octenol that gives them the extra push and sends them straight for the magnet. Once a mosquito has been trapped by the mosquito magnet octenol, they will eventually become dehydrated and die.
