Battery Operated Lighting Pros and Cons

Trying to choose the right lighting for your camping and RV-ing experience is not an easy decision. It may not be rocket science, but there are a lot of choices to think about. Your lifestyle, your camping situation and your camping frequency should all factor into the decision. Below we’ve tried to make the decision a little easier for you by naming some of the pros and cons to one of the most popular lighting and lantern choices on the market today- the battery operated lighting system.

The Pros to Battery Operated Lighting

  • Convenience- when you are camping, you don’t have to tote around an electrical outlet, generator or propane tank just to light your lantern. This can be incredibly handy, especially when you are already short on space. This is also great if you are planning on doing some hiking and are looking for the lightest type of lantern possible. No one wants to carry a propane tank up a 15 km mountain!
  • Ease of Use- if you are doing a lot of camping with the kiddies, then battery operated lighting is your best option. The lighting system goes on with a flick of a switch and you do not have to worry about children burning their hands, starting a fire or anything other drastic problems you can live without.
  • Durable – battery operated lighting, including lanterns, tend to be build tougher. They can handle all weather, all climates and all situations so you don’t have to worry about your lighting breaking half way through your camping trip.

The Cons to Battery Operated Lighting

  • Environmentally hazardous- batteries are not good for the environment. They are harsh to make and even harsher to get rid of.

Cost- battery operated lighting is not more expensive to initially buy. However, if you are using C, D or AA batteries, then you will soon realize how quickly the camping trip will add up. The best alternative is to opt for a rechargeable battery operated lantern that uses LED action. That way you are saving both your pocket change and the environment.
