CAMPING COOLERS

Keeping your drinks and perishable foods cool on a camping trip can be a challenge. For tent camping trips you’ll need a portable cooler of some kind. The traditional ice chest is still popular but it’s lighter and easier to tote around. There are even models with wheels for really easy transport. Hate sloshing around in icy water to find that soggy package of cheese? New technologies are making it possible to have a portable cooler that doesn’t require ice to do its job.

Coleman 62-quart Xtreme wheeled cooler

This cooler stores ice for up to five days even when it’s 90 degrees outside. The interior measures 16.5” x 9.75” x 12.25” and will hold up to 85 cans. It rolls around easily on two large wheels; just grab the tow handle with one hand and pull. Two-way carrying handles also let you lift the cooler. The hinged lid has built-in beverage holders, and a built-in channel provides easy drainage.

Electric Camping Coolers

Electric, or thermoelectric, coolers are iceless, eliminating that annoying chore of replenishing the ice in a regular cooler. The cooling power comes from your vehicle; just plug the cooler into the 12-volt outlet in your car or truck. The drawback here is that a thermoelectric cooler may run down the vehicle’s battery if left plugged in after the motor has been turned off. However, if you cool your food and drinks before loading the cooler and let it run while you’re on the road, it should keep everything cool for an extended period. Some thermoelectric coolers come with auxiliary 120-volt power supplies, but these may not be usable in a campground.

Camping Ice Cooler

An ice cooler is an insulated chest designed to keep food and beverages cold by packing them in ice. Ice coolers range in size from those made to hold just a few drink cans and snacks to those large enough to hold enough food for a whole family for several days. Small coolers may have one integrated carry-handle, while larger models have a handle at each end or wheels for rolling.
