HANGING CANDLE LANTERNS

Sometimes it seems like one campsite looks just like another. While many campgrounds are scenic and enjoyable, others seem to be built on an old parking lot. If you’re planning on staying for a couple of days, try personalizing your site with hanging candle lanterns for a warmer, romantic feeling. The glow of candlelight softens even the most mundane environments. Caution is in order, however, since candles can easily tip over or fall and start a fire where you don’t want it. Be sure to hang these lanterns away from dry vegetation, and keep a bucket of water handy. And NEVER have an open flame of any kind inside a tent! A safer alternative, and a must in high fire danger areas, are battery-powered candles. They are not quite the same, but that’s a small price to pay for the safety of your family—and everyone else at the campground, too.

Hanging Moroccan Lanterns

One very popular style of hanging lanterns is known as Moroccan, sometimes also called Middle Eastern. These consist of a multi-sided, metal lantern with panes of colored, etched glass. The metal, usually tin, is punched with a pattern of holes and coated with a bronze finish. When a candle is placed inside the lantern, the pattern of holes casts interesting shadows, as well as allowing oxygen inside. The colored and etched glass adds to the mysterious atmosphere created by the lantern, while protecting the candle from wind gusts.

Boston Warehouse Lantern Set

The Boston Warehouse set of three lanterns is styled after lanterns from the Colonial era. These are small models with a three-inch-square base and a total height of 6.5 inches. Made of black metal, each of the four glass panels is crisscrossed by thin bars in an X-pattern for extra stability. Each lantern can hold one tealight (small candle) or a small battery-powered candle.
