Why Is Lithium Used In Batteries?
If you lay your hands on a periodic table chart, you will see the symbol 'Li' located in Group 1 of the periodic table. It is one of the lightest elements, as far as solids are concerned, and is primarily used in heat transfer alloys and batteries. It is used in batteries because of its high electrochemical properties. The lithium battery produces around 3V as compared to a normal battery (1.5V). When the going gets tough, the lithium batteries get going. These are items you should never be without.
How Do Lithium Batteries Work? The most common type of lithium cells use metallic lithium as the anode and manganese dioxide as the cathode, with the lithium salt dissolved in an organic solvent. Lithium batteries are used in many items including clocks, cameras, video games, mobile phones, and walkmen. These batteries work for longer durations of time but they are slightly more expensive than their nickel hydride counterparts.
A very popular type is the lithium-ion battery. Lithium ion batteries or Li-Ion as they are better known, are high power density rechargeable batteries, and are widely used in consumer electronics. These versions are small and mobile since the ions need less storage space, hence more battery weight is used as charge. As a result, these models are lighter in weight. If you were using this battery for your notebook or cellular phone then typically its lithium ion batteries life would not be more than three to five years. One of the greatest advantages of the Li-Ion battery is that it has a low self-discharge rate at about 5% per month, less than the average battery. These items generally have a voltage of 3.6V and a charging voltage of 4.2V. They cannot be charged in a super fast mode and the normal time taken is four hours. They should be charged as often as possible and kept in a cool place. These batteries age quickly if kept in extreme temperatures, and contact with flames is a no-no. In addition to this, if it is stored in a low charge then you might end up having a dead battery on your hands. Never open the casing as there is a possibility of it exploding.
