Are Recreational Vehicles Typically Covered Under Homeowners’ Insurance?

Any RV owner will tell you that owning a motor home is all about the thrill and excitement of the open road.

If you are a fan of the open road living the dream, ensure you are doing everything you can to safeguard that dream and your investment from accidents and other unexpected events.

More than just a means of transportation, your RV is your home away from home and a source of many great experiences and memories.
The Annotated Homeowners’ Policy from the Ultimate Insurance Seminar 2000 states in its Exceptions to Property Not Covered that:

“motor or engine propelled vehicles or machines designed for movement on land are normally not covered, they are covered if not subject to motor vehicle registration and they are used to assist the handicapped, are power mowers, golf carts, recreational vehicles while used ON the “residence premises,” or farm equipment not designed for use principally on public roads.”

Companies That Offer This Service
Concord Group Insurance offers recreational vehicle insurance in conjunction with your home and auto insurance. They provide liability protection if someone accidentally gets hurt or you unintentionally injure someone while operating the recreational vehicle.

MetLife Auto & Home offers liability limits of $25,000 per person/$50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $10,000 for property damage. Included are medical, surgical, dental, ambulance and hospital expenses incurred within one year of a recreational vehicle accident. The policy protects both your recreational vehicle and any small sleds or trailers designed for use with it.

Reducing Your Premiums
You may qualify for discounted premiums if you:
§ Complete a safety course
§ Become a member of a Recreational Vehicle Association
§ A discount may apply if you have more than one policy, even if it’s not for a recreational vehicle
§ Fit your vehicle with an anti-theft device

Pros And Cons Of Getting An RV Insurance Policy
Motor home insurance combines the protection offered by both automobile and homeowners’ policies, including protection from loss due to fire, smoke, theft, vandalism, landslides, hail, windstorms, and collision. Some of the cons are:
§ Premiums may increase if you are an inexperienced driver or if you live in a high-risk area
§ Premiums may increase if you have a poor driving record or a history of accidents.

It is sensible to err on the side of caution when it comes to recreational vehicle insurance coverage. From temperature extremes to poor conditions on the roads, recreational vehicles are put up to a lot of punishment. Even new RVs are just as vulnerable to unexpected dangers. RV insurance is not only a legal requirement; it is absolutely necessary.

There are several insurance companies that focus mainly on insuring recreational vehicles. These companies offer comprehensive policies that thoroughly protect RV owners. Some of the top RV insurance companies are Gilbert RV Insurance, RV America Insurance, Progressive RV Insurance, and Good Sam RV Insurance.
